While ranking videos, Google and many other search engines considers the match between the searched keywords and video meta  title. Google also allows us to put in meta description and keywords, which currently have no influence on search ranking.

Google loves the video when the title tag of the video and the page matches and provides higher position in search results.

Just like conventional SEO, long tail keywords are easy to rank higher in search engines for videos too. If one video is titled “SEO” and  other video is titled “Video SEO Explained“, then the later will have more chances to rank higher for that particular term according to  the current Google’s algorithm. Google do not read the video content, it can only read the title with description and keywords and  accordingly rank the videos. Currently they have added captions, which helps too.

It is a simple question and answer can be both. It all depends on the user. If you wish to drive traffic to your YouTube Channel and  video then you should host your video on YouTube but if you wish to drive traffic to your website then you must host the video on  your website.

I prefer it to be hosted on Website. Normally people browse YouTube for information and to learn. Readers and viewers are going to get lots of options on YouTube so they will view your video and shift to another for more. Once they shift to another video, your traffic is lost. But if they come to your website, they will want to know more about your other related informative posts and hence I prefer videos to be hosted on my own website.

How to host videos on our website?
There is a service called Wistia. It is specifically made for video marketing. Upload your video on their website and embed it on your website. This way you would have hosted the video on your website. They also provide the Video XML Sitemap (attributing ownership of the video to your site) which you can submit now to search engines which enable easy and fast indexing of your hosted videos.

How to create manually and submit Video XML Sitemap?
This only is applicable if you are hosting the video on your website. You can use Google Webmaster Tools to submit Video Sitemap. If you are to create manual Video XML Sitemap then provide the following information.

  • Title
  • Description
  • URL of the play page (This is the page you want to show up in search results)
  • URL for the thumbnail you wish to associate with the video
  • URL of location or URL for the player location (If you are using YouTube or any other hosting apart from your website then use the URL for player location or else use URL of location on your server.

Keyword Research for Video SEO.
Conventional SEO have Google keyword tool, similarly Video SEO for Google have YouTube Keyword Tool. More often this tool is unreliable coz for a very highly searched terms like SEO, it returns no results hence it is better to use YouTube Suggest. It does not give much more details but you can get some ideas on keywords which you can use in your webpage where you are hosting video.

Once you have determined related keywords, you need to put in various places like Video Title, File Name, Video description, Closed caption or transcript file, comments and surrounding text.

Video SEO Transcribe
As search engines cannot detect videos, try to transcribe the content and put it underneath the video to get it indexed conventionally.

Embed Link Modification
When you host your video on your own website using embed link from external site like Wistia, then you MUST modify the embed link to display “{Keyword Phrase} by {Author name}” where you should use real keyphrase and author name within the link as shown here.
